Enough is Enough with the Mask Fearmongering
There’s never any point in getting angry over the daily opinion of the editorial board at the LNP, because taking anything they say seriously was never in the cards, anyway.
The LNP editorial board’s opinions usually range from almost amusingly naïve to toxically disingenuous, with a few notable and admirable exceptions.
Today’s editorial – Enough with the face mask culture war. Masks keep others safe, so please wear one – is not one of those notable, admirable exceptions.
As with most of modern journalism, you have a grouping of intellectually incurious people with bachelor’s degrees in communications lecturing the public about the importance of science, while simultaneously not having the foggiest clue what the science actually says.
They also scold people for politics, while staking out a position based solely on the opinions of political figures they elevate and venerate.
Go on and read the piece they published today. I’ll wait.
OK, leaving aside the usual overly earnest and clunky prose their editorials are famous for, the worst of the dishonesty comes right about here.
Even during the yellow phase, businesses must provide their employees with masks to wear while working, and customers who enter those businesses also must wear masks, according to an order signed April 15 by Pennsylvania Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine. (According to that order, businesses that provide medication, medical supplies or groceries must provide an alternate means of delivering goods to customers who cannot wear masks.)
The LNP would have you believe that Rachel Levine, the political appointee with no public health policy experience, is able to make law by signing orders.
Actually, no. The Pennsylvania constitution is very clear on this, and on the fact that Levine’s recommendations are not, in fact, laws.
There is no law requiring the wearing of a mask in Pennsylvania.
As noted here many times, Levine is a child psychiatrist whose incompetence, mismanagement and reliance on fatally flawed models are what has driven the state’s unnecessary lockdown, as well as the 70% infection rate among those in senior care and nursing homes.
But let’s leave aside the obviously flawed legal argument from the LNP.
Let’s talk about their reliance on junk science and fear tactics.
Unless you have a diagnosed medical condition that would be worsened by wearing a mask, there’s no excuse not to wear one.
A mask is not a tool of tyranny or a symbol of political correctness. It’s just something we need to wear to protect other people from a virus we could be carrying without knowing it.
Actually, there are a long list of reasons – medical and scientific reasons – not to wear a mask. And pulling a bait and switch, conflating the assertion with political motives, shows how disingenuous they are being.
And for context, keep in mind that the CDC is now admitting that the mortality rate for coronavirus is on par with the seasonal flu, something for which we don’t lockdown the entire economy every year.
Homemade masks, surgical masks, cloth masks, the absolutely absurd crochet masks, bandanas – all of these are considered acceptable as masks – yet they have absolutely no ability to stop a virus. In fact, short of a full respirator or N95, you’re just fooling yourself.
It’s your little security blanket you hug, hoping to keep the monster in the closet at bay.
(Also notable, watch how many people wear their masks below their nose or off to the side – yeah, even if the mask helped, that’s not gonna help, my friend.)
But beyond that, there are dangers.
N95s are dangerous to wear for any extended period. Breathing over and over exhaled air turns into carbon dioxide, which is why we feel dizzy. This intoxicates the user and much more when he must move, carry out displacement actions. It causes discomfort, loss of reflexes and conscious thought. It generates great fatigue. In addition, oxygen deficiency causes glucose breakdown and endangered lactic acid rise.
N95 masks are estimated to reduce oxygen intake by anywhere from 5 to 20 percent. That’s significant, even for a healthy person. It can cause dizziness and lightheadedness. If you wear a mask long enough, it can damage the lungs. For a patient in respiratory distress, it can even be life threatening.
Meanwhile, if you use a cloth mask so you’re not breathing your own CO2, it’s pretty much ineffective. From Science Daily:
The widespread use of cloth masks by healthcare workers may actually put them at increased risk of respiratory illness and viral infections and their global use should be discouraged, according to a UNSW study.
The results of the first randomized clinical trial (RCT) to study the efficacy of cloth masks were published in the journal BMJ Open.
The trial saw 1607 hospital healthcare workers across 14 hospitals in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, split into three groups: those wearing medical masks, those wearing cloth masks and a control group based on usual practice, which included mask wearing.
Workers used the mask on every shift for four consecutive weeks.
The study found respiratory infection was much higher among healthcare workers wearing cloth masks.
The penetration of cloth masks by particles was almost 97% compared to medical masks with 44%.
The LNP says, “We’d rather wear masks than carry the worry that we might make other people sick. The former is a minor inconvenience. The latter is a burden we’d rather not shoulder.”
I can’t speak to how honest they’re being, but if they’re anything like the rest of the Karen media, they’re probably being hypocrites.
The panic over the pandemic and all the fear mongering from the mainstream media has done more damage than anything a virus could have.
Deaths of despair – ranging from suicides to overdose to undiagnosed and untreated illnesses and cancers – far exceed COVID deaths.
Those states that reopened weeks ago – the ones you see CNN shaming over Memorial Day, mind you – have seen a continual decline in mortalities and cases.
Thirteen states have been open for more than three weeks now (prior to 5/1) and these states have since seen daily cases fall 29% to 2,497.
But the economic damage from flawed virus models have caused irreparable harm to the economy, to families, to working class people and to small businesses.
A new study from JP Morgan shows that Coronavirus lockdowns have failed to alter the course of the pandemic but have instead ‘destroyed millions of livelihoods.’
Falling infection rates since lockdowns were lifted suggest that the virus ‘likely has its own dynamics’ which are ‘unrelated to often inconsistent lockdown measures’, a report published by the financial services giant said.
Denmark is among the countries which has seen its R rate continue to fall after schools and shopping malls re-opened, while Germany’s rate has mostly remained below 1.0 after the lockdown was eased.
The report also shows many US states including Alabama, Wisconsin and Colorado enjoying lower R rates after lockdown measures were lifted.
Author Marko Kolanovic, a trained physicist and a strategist for JP Morgan, said governments had been spooked by ‘flawed scientific papers‘ into imposing lockdowns which were ‘inefficient or late’ and had little effect.
“Unlike rigorous testing of new drugs, lockdowns were administered with little consideration that they might not only cause economic devastation but potentially more deaths than Covid-19 itself,” he says.
The JP Morgan report includes graphs showing that ‘the vast majority of countries had decreased infection rates’ after lockdowns were lifted.
Infection rates have continued to decline even once a lag period for new infections to become visible is factored in, the report says.
“While we often hear that lockdowns are driven by scientific models, and that there is an exact relationship between the level of economic activity and the spread of [the] virus – this is not supported by the data,” the report says.
“Indeed, virtually everywhere infection rates have declined after re-opening even after allowing for an appropriate measurement lag.”
“This means that the pandemic and Covid-19 likely have [their] own dynamics unrelated to often inconsistent lockdown measures that were being implemented.”
Those dynamics may be influenced by increased hand-washing and even weather patterns but seemingly not by full-scale lockdowns, the report suggests.
“The fact that re-opening did not change the course of the pandemic is consistent with studies showing that initiation of full lockdowns did not alter the course of the pandemic either,” it says.
That’s what the science and data show.
Bottom line: It’s not a law in Pennsylvania to wear a mask. Wear one if you want, but don’t let the mainstream media gaslight you.
If a business wants you to wear one, you can vote with your feet and your wallet either way. But you should respect the wishes of the business owner.
When enough of us say ‘enough is enough’ and cast off the masks, both government and businesses will have to listen.
Even if the LNP, bless that little herd, never does.
